What do you need to create a dust-free home?

If you have asthma or allergies, there’s a high chance that keeping dust at bay in your home will be essential to preventing attacks and allergies flares. While it can be difficult to keep all dust under control, there are several steps you can take to prevent its spread through your house remodeling to ensure you’re as healthy as possible while you’re at home. Find out what these steps are in this blog post!

Allergy Season Tips

While there is no cure for seasonal allergies, there are many steps you can take in your everyday life to live with your allergies and reduce their impact.

Start by taking these simple steps: Remove clutter from your living space and get rid of unnecessary dust collectors, like old newspapers. Dust mites thrive in dirty spaces, so cleaning often is essential. Vacuum everything – including drapes, upholstery and carpets.

Shoes, your most dangerous enemy

The problem with shoes is that they carry dirt, germs and all sorts of nasty things. It’s best if you can only wear shoes when it’s really necessary.

Floors

You will want smooth and nonporous floors. Porous floors, such as wood, leave little pockets of air between floorboards where dirt can collect.

Not only is hardwood generally not preferred for homes with pets or children because of these little dust traps, but it is also very susceptible to scratches and stains that harbor dirt more easily than tile or laminate floors. I would highly recommend having at least one room of your house with laminate flooring; it cleans up quickly and is easy to wash clean when needed!

Curtains and Blinds

Both curtains and blinds can be used to help keep your house free of dust. Both are usually washable, which means they can make your house look brighter with less effort than it would take to vacuum every day. Curtains also give some privacy, which is always good.

Mattress Covers

A mattress cover is essentially a cover that fits over your mattress and protects it from all sorts of unpleasant things, including dirt, stains, bacteria, bed bugs and other allergens.

A mattress cover will not only help you keep your bed clean but also protect it from harm so that it can last for many years. Another benefit of using mattress covers is that they can add comfort to your sleep as well. Some foam mattresses get quite warm over time.

Bedding

When it comes to keeping your house dust free, your mattress and pillows should be at top of mind. If you have pets, they’re probably rolling around on or digging into those mattresses and pillows, leaving behind dander and allergens that contribute directly to house dust. Keep beds in vacuum-sealed protective covers; change bedding weekly. Wash bedding often.

Carpets and Rugs

Carpets, rugs and other floor coverings can trap dirt and allergens inside your home. If you have carpet or rugs in your house, consider swapping them out for hard floors.

Not only will it help reduce allergens, but also make cleaning much easier! Keeping carpets clean is a challenge because pet hair tends to stick around, but cleaning once or twice per week should be enough. Another benefit of removing carpet is that it’s quieter than many other flooring options.
