5 Tips to Achieve Complete Success in AA Meetings in Michigan

Quitting alcohol can seem impossible for an alcoholic. No doubt it is a tough task, but it is possible. In fact, it can get easier, if you make a few changes in yourselves and your life.

Apart from attending AA meetings in Michigan regularly, you must work upon your own self and your surroundings to make your life “alcohol-proof.”

  1. Change your “hangouts”

It will be harder for you to quit drinking if you continue to spend time in the same old hangouts. So, time to say goodbye to your favorite pubs, bars, and other “spots” where you had drink parties.

Look out for new places such as coffee shops and others where you can smell freshly brewed coffee instead of those lingering alcohol smells of the pubs.

  1. Change your activities

Your favorite evening pastime was visiting a bar for a drink. Time to change your evening pastime now. Instead of the bar, head to the gym or take your dog for a long walk. Spend time in nature or enroll in a new language class. Join a dance class or a yoga session. Pursue a hobby.

  1. Be honest

“You are only as sick as your secrets.” This is a common adage used in AA meetings. It means you need to be honest to yourselves and bring out those secrets that you have kept to yourselves. Dig out those buried emotions. Only then can you expect to banish alcohol completely because you have been using alcohol as a “crutch.”

At the same time, you must also be honest about your alcoholism. Denial hardly works.

And yes, it works, to be honest about your commitment to stay sober and your attending meetings. Let your friends and family know you are putting in efforts to become sober. This will give you more encouragement and support from your loved ones.

  1. Ask for help

No, this isn’t a sign of weakness. Asking for help means you are confident about yourselves and accept your situation; you trust others and their abilities too. People on recovery may find themselves overwhelmed in certain situations. Reach out for your sponsor or support system. Talk to the therapist. Don’t hesitate. Just do it.

Want to quit drinking? Take help from local AA meetings. Successes in life are the outcomes of many helping hands. Nobody succeeds all on their own.

  1. Care for yourselves

Very important! Alcoholics usually forget themselves. Remember: self-care, selfishness, and self-pity are three different things.

Self-care means taking care of oneself, physically and emotionally. Take care of how you look and feel. Tame your thoughts. Feel good about yourself. Love yourselves. Catch the brighter side of yourselves.

Slowly, you will find alcohol does not fit in your life at all.

And while you practice the above tips, do not forget to use the Sobriety Calculator. It helps to keep a tab of your sober days. This can motivate you further in recovery.
