What’s New

Update to Android 12.1!

We have updated our interface to run Android 12.1! This update could cause certain apps to not be able to launch (see the issues that have been reported below for more information).

Optional Diagnostic Data

In this update the data collection for telemetry (optional Diagnostic data set-up available in the Windows Subsystem for Android Settings app) has been turned off by default. To assist us in making Windows Subsystem for Android better and provide useful telemetry regarding Android application usage Please enable this option within your Windows Subsystem for Android Settings app!

Advanced Networking

Connectivity to networks to Windows Subsystem to Android with the newer Insider Preview versions (OS build 22621+) has been enhanced to allow Android apps to communicate with devices connected to similar networks as Windows PC. With advanced connectivity, you can stream your preferred content through speakers connected to that same network. You can also connect the security camera (or any other smart home devices) using an compatible Android application.

Redesign of the Settings app

The Windows Subsystem for Android Settings app has been completely revamped and updated in an enormous manner. The app has been redesigned from the beginning to include more clear settings groups, grouped navigation, and a streamlined user experience. We’ve also included the diagnostic data viewer, where you can view the entirety of the diagnostic data that is collected by the Subsystem. You can also use the setting options in the updated compatibility settings that allow you to enable solutions for specific apps, for example, forcing apps to not be resizable or allowing swipes to be used with an arrow key.

Enhancements to Windows integration

We’ve made several significant enhancements to Android apps that work with Windows with this update. For the latest Insider Preview builds (OS Build 22621+), Windows taskbar icons will now indicate the Android programs are currently using microphones or location as well as other system services within the system tray. Additionally, the taskbar that is auto-hidden will properly hide and show in the event that Android app are active. Android toasts are now displayed as Windows notifications and Windows notifications will be reflected as well. Window name of the Android apps will also show the Android activity’s name. Additionally, for the latest Insider Preview versions (OS 22621 and up), Android apps will not be restarted once your devices are removed from standby mode, but instead resume where you were.

Camera enhancements in Android apps

Numerous camera updates are being delivered with this upgrade. The camera’s orientation is now adjusted to the natural orientation and issues with an incorrect camera preview, problems that caused letterboxing and squishing in the feed from the camera have been fixed.
