Creativity distinguishes really good stories from just good songs, be it melodic or lyrical. So be creative with your lyrics.
Think of new ways to say certain things, be they specific words or phrases. For example, what could you say instead of “You are the love of my life”?
You are a ray of sunshine broken through the clouds
You are in a daisy field
What are the words that can mean “time”?
Seasons
Hourglass
So there are many ways you can say certain words and phrases that seem overused.
One exercise you can do is find the song you are thinking of and rewrite the song. Find new ways to deliver lyrics.
If you have difficulty exercising, explore five senses: visual hearing, touch, smell, and taste. For example, you can create animated images that guide listeners through a story they can experience, smell, and feel.
Let’s just say the song is about love. If love smelled, how would it smell? How would that sound? What does it physically look like? Have fun finding new ways to say phrases that have been sung over and over again.
Rhyme
Another way to create creative lyrics is to use literary tools to create a sense of rhythm. For many songwriters, there seems to be a lot of attention at the end of each line for rhyming lyrics. There are ways to rhyme at the end of each line using devices such as half rhymes, half rhymes, and imperfect rhymes. Although subtlety adds a lot of weight to A to Z lyrics, it’s not the only way to stream lyrics. You can use resonance, alliteration, and other rhyming tools that may appear through your lyrics or, in other words, internal rhyme. Listen to rap and you will hear a lot of these other rhyming devices. It is clear in the rhyme patterns that the focus of the rap is on rhythm rather than melody.
Rhyming schemes for final rhyming
Half the rhyme
Semi-rhymes are when two words have consonant endings. Examples are “hand” and “bending”.
Semi Rime
Half-rhyme is a rhyme with a syllable added to one word. Here are some examples: “ran” and “banner”.
I use it regularly because it helps if I can’t find the perfect rhyme, and I also fall in love with a word that happens to match semi-rhyme. This is one of the techniques I use for semi-rhymes. I have the rhyming syllable match the melody, and then I add an extra note to the melody to fit the extra syllable into the song.
Imperfect rhymed
An imperfect rhyme is a rhyme in which the rhyming syllable of one word is accented and the other word is unaccented. And examples of this are “stuff” and “climbing.” You may hear the word “ing” highlighted over the word “thing” and “ing” “climbing” without the stress.
